stay salty

Earlier this week, one of my dad’s spiritual mentors, Pastor Dale and his granddaughter visited us in Aptos, CA. This was my first time seeing them in eight years, but we have all kept in touch through social media. Throughout the weekend Pastor Dale would always say “Stay Salty.” At that time, I thought he was just making references to the ocean reminding me to get in the water and “stay salty” by surfing or swimming. However, “Stay Salty” really resonated in my spirit and stirred something up in me to write this blog and it reminded me of being “Salts to the earth.”

I was reading in Mark 9, when Jesus said in verse 49-50 “Everyone will be salted with fire. Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can you make it salty again? Have salt among yourselves, and be at peace with each other.” Everytime I would read being “salts to the earth,” I acknowledged the call to be salts on earth but never understood what that really meant until today.

When I first read that, I felt the Holy Spirit inclined me to understand what does salt have to do with anything and why is it mentioned all throughout the bible?

Salt is so significant! In the old testament, people would sacrifice and make offerings. People would season their offerings with salt, this was known as a covenant of salt. The Covenant of salt represented the enduring and eternal covenant God has with His people.

Salt has multiple purposes in which it gives taste and preserves the longevity of food. Likewise, when I was digging for salt’s purpose, I received revelation.

We, as Christians, need to be the salts of the earth to make sure the taste and flavor of the Gospel is upheld, because if it is watered down or it loses its taste then the Word of God loses its flavor. The people who are sharing the Word of Gold saltless, lose their flavor, and those who are listening don’t get to taste the goodness of the Word when it is tasteless. We have to be salts of the earth to PRESERVE the Gospel.

I believe the reason why we see so much division, strife, and hate, is because the church has lost its flavor over the years. Christians have lost the taste of the goodness of the Gospel and how enriching it is when following Jesus. Overtime, we have lost the flavor.

The very thing that is supposed to fill us up, is becoming less and less preserved and flavorful because we aren’t being true salts. The Word is not rotting, we are.

  1. Daniel Gonzalez says:

”I believe the reason why we see so much division, strife, and hate, is because the church has lost its flavor over the years. Christians have lost the taste of the goodness of the Gospel and how enriching it is when following Jesus. Overtime, we have lost the flavor.”

This statement was so good I had to read it again and again. Powerful.

  2. Pauline A. says:

“The Word is not rotting, we are.”

So good. Lord, I pray that we don’t shut You out. I have been there. And it’s an ugly place to be. But JESUS and His love is so much bigger than what we see or know. And when receive His love, that salt wants to come out!!

Praying over any hearts that are being lead astray so that we become who God called us to be — The Salt of the Earth.
